Railroad Settlement Allowed
A settlement agreed to after what has been described as marathon negotiations ended a rail strike on Friday. The agreement provides workers with a 24% raise over five years and an additional personal day. It also changes the strict attendance policies to allow for absences on sick days.
However, the agreement doesn't provide sick days, a major problem for many railroad workers. This could cause the unions to oppose arbitration, which would start a cooling-off period of 30 days.
Land Grants
Railroad companies used the land granted to them by federal and state governments in order to lower the cost of building their lines. This was a source of capital that they could use to finance mortgage loans as well as sell bonds in the future. This helped them attract people to the area through which the lines would pass. This led to an increase in demand for their services.

Railroads helped with programs for improving agriculture which encouraged farmers to achieve success and increase the need for railroad transportation.

The federal government provided 130 million acres to the first five companies that constructed a transcontinental railroad and the states provided 50 million acres.
In order to receive land grants, railroads had to give up the rights they acquired as compensation or to help in construction.
